Becoming fluent: Industry operators will likely continue to struggle as online language software improves

The Language Instruction industry is one of the smallest industries in the education sector and is shrinking even more. As language-learning apps have continued to find success with consumers, demand for language instructors has evaporated. These apps have had strong growth through the pandemic, but social distancing restrictions prevented language instruction centers from capturing heightened demand. Language instruction centers enjoyed growth in the years following, though changes were muted because of intense competition and shaky disposable income. Overall, industry-wide revenue has been dropping at an a CAGR of 2.1% over the past five years and is expected to total $1.8 billion in 2023, when revenue will sink by an estimated 1.8%. Language schools offer language instruction ranging from conversational skills for personal enrichment to intensive training courses for career or educational opportunities. Schools teach foreign languages, sign language and English as a second language. This industry does not include language instruction software. This report covers the scope, size, disposition and growth of the industry including the key sensitivities and success factors. Also included are five year industry forecasts, growth rates and an analysis of the industry key players and their market shares.
