Key Highlights

  • The adoption of contactless payments for public transport will further push card payments in Ireland. In March 2023, travel company Burkesbus deployed contactless EMV payments for passengers traveling with Burkesbus in Galway and Mayo. This enables passengers to pay for bus fares via contactless payment cards and NFC-based mobile payment solutions. Similarly, in May 2023, the National Transport Authority announced plans to introduce contactless payment cards on Dublin buses. However, the timeline of the launch has not been announced as of the time of writing.
  • Currently, Ireland does not have a domestic instant payment system. However, some banks offer real-time payment services via SEPA Instant Credit Transfer, a pan-European instant credit transfer scheme. With just 11 participants, access to this scheme is limited, which has led to low adoption. To overcome these barriers, in 2020, a consortium of Ireland-based banks-including Allied Irish Banks (AIB), Bank of Ireland, KBC, and Permanent tsb-established a new instant mobile P2P system known as Synch, which planned to launch a mobile app dubbed Yippay. However, following various regulatory roadblocks and delays, Synch ceased its operations and ended plans to launch Yippay in November 2023.
  • As per Banking & Payments Federation Ireland (BPFI) data, in Q2 2023, contactless payments accounted for almost 85% of all domestic POS transactions. Amid the growing number of payment technology innovations, contactless payments are poised for further integration into daily activities, signaling future growth in sectors such as transportation and retail. The average daily contactless payment volume was 3.8 million during Q2 2023, worth EUR63 million ($68.1 million) per day.
