The global biocides market is projected to grow at a CAGR of 5.85% to reach US$12.537 billion by 2026, from US$8.421 billion in 2019.

Biocides are a group of poisonous substances that can either be preservatives, insecticides, disinfectants, or pesticides that are used in order to control the organisms that may be harmful to human or animal health or cause damage to manufactured goods and nature. They have a number of applications where they are crucial in controlling the spread of infectious diseases in hospitals and its facilities as it is the easiest mode of transmission of viruses and to prevent it biocides are used, also it is used in a number of consumer products and the food industry.

Driving Factors

The primary market driver of the market is the growing industries such as healthcare, food and beverage, construction, and many others. Also, the increasing demand for disinfectants and other self-cleansing products has led to growth. One of the major reasons for the growth in this industry is the use of cooling towers in power plants, mining, and chemical plants, as cooling water systems provide a favorable environment for the growth of microorganisms. This microbial growth is in the form of a film called ‘biofilm’. Biofilms can cause fouling and can adversely affect equipment performance. They can accelerate corrosion rates and can even perforate the surfaces of cooling towers and heat exchangers. Biofilms can promote corrosion of fouled metal surfaces, which is referred to as microbially influenced corrosion (MIC). In the oil & gas industry, the metal infrastructure used for oil & gas processing undergoes MIC mostly because of sulfate-reducing bacteria (SRB). The growth of SRB is induced by the low content of oxygen, together with stagnant liquid inside the pipelines. Therefore, the demand for oxidizing & non-oxidizing biocides has increased as they are widely used in the manufacturing of household, industrial & institutional (HI&I) cleaning products such as disinfectant wipes, sprays, and other liquids.

Market Share Segmentation

By end-user industry, the biocides market is expected to grow owing to the increasing demand for products such as disinfectants, wood preservatives, rodenticides, consumer products used daily, in-can preservatives, used in homes, and public places such as hospitals and industries will witness a growth in its CAGR. Also, governments of various countries are focusing on the consumption of clean water as with the increasing population the need of consuming clean and potable water is at a high, and with the use of biocides, wastewater can be processed and made drinkable in the near future. Also, household and personal care products are one of the highest applications for biocides due to the COVID-19 pandemic the sudden surge in the demand for disinfectants and sanitizers was at a high which overall impacted the biocide market and led to its growth. The APAC market is the largest market for biocides and the growth in the APAC region is primarily driven by the increasing demand for biocide products from the water treatment, household & personal care, paints & coatings, and food & beverage segments are driving the market in this region. China has the largest shares in the APAC market, has emerged as a labor-intensive and high-technology working industry producing at a low operating cost and utilizing economies of scale. These strategies have brought exponential growth to the Chinese manufacturing industry.

Growth Factors

Government regulation on the consumption of freshwater

Many countries have seen a surge in their population in the last few years and with the increasing population the increase in the demand for drinkable and consumable water is increasing, the scarce water resources must be sustainably used and made drinkable. With the use of biocides, this wastewater can be made consumable with the introduction of certain bacteria. Thus, the demand for biocides is expected to increase.

Household and personal care products being the largest application

Household personal care products are one of the largest markets with the use of biocides in recent years. Accounting to the COVID-19 pandemic the surge in the use of disinfectants and self-cleansing products was at an all-time high leading to the growth in the industry.

Restraints

Complications involved in registration of biocides

Before the launch of every biocide product, the Biocidal Products Regulation (BPR) accounts for a huge amount of toxicology and environmental effect testing for registration of all its types. The process is time-consuming as well as expensive, also the BPR ensures a high amount of protection for humans, animals, and the environment before its launch. As a lot of countries are stringent about environmental issues the use of biocides is restricted and requires authorization before its launch in the market. The cost of registering each biocide is quite a lot under the current regulations.

Impact of COVID-19 on the Biocides Market

The COVID-19 has had a big impact on the livelihoods and has even a bigger impact on the industries, but the biocides market has had less of an impact owing to the consumption of day-to-day consumer products required in every household. The disruption in the supply chain has mainly led to the impact on this market. To control the spread of the virus using disinfectants and sanitizers were some of the prime things which have led to the growth of the market even in these tough times. The sudden surge of these products has somewhat made the biocide market neutral. Also, water treatment is one of the main agendas in the APAC region with China and India being the most populous countries in the world have a limited supply of freshwater reservoirs and with the increase in the demand for water sources, the biocides industry is expected to see growth in the near future. Europe is the second-largest region for the biocides market by value followed by North America. As both these regions have a highly regulated market for biocides.
