Impact of the COVID-19 pandemic
The COVID-19 pandemic led to a global slowdown in the economy and revenue. Most industries suffered huge losses, owing to the strict protocols set up by the government. However, the pandemic had a positive impact on the Mexican avocado market. Since most people were stuck in their homes, owing to the lockdown regulations, the importance of home-cooked and healthy meals grew. The USA, the biggest market for the Mexican avocado market, reported a significant increase in imports and sales of avocados. According to an analysis by Texas A&M University, 2.1 billion pounds of avocados were imported from Mexico to the US during the 2019-2020 season. Also, in 2021, Mexico exported 1.2 million metric tons of avocados to the USA, according to the USDA. The steady market demand helped in sustaining the market growth throughout the COVID-19 pandemic, and with the commencement of most major industrial production and processes, the market is anticipated to rise even further.
