Tunisia, officially the Republic of Tunisia, is a country in North Africa bordering the Mediterranean Sea and located between Algeria and Libya. It has an area of 163,610 square kilometers. Tunisia has borders with Algeria to the west and southwest, Libya to the southeast, and the Mediterranean Sea to the north and east. Cape Angela which is the northernmost point on the African continent is also the northernmost point of Tunisia. Tunisia became an independent country in 1956.
Tunisia is estimated to have a population of 12.235 million in the year 2023 and is expected to reach 12.609 million by 2027, increasing at a CAGR of 0.76%.
Tunisia’s real gross domestic product (GDP) was TND 88.102 billion in 2020 and while recovering from the COVID-19 impact it increased by 2.664% to be around TND 91.047 billion in 2021. It is further expected to increase by 2.26% and reach TND 104.14 billion by 2027.
Tunisia’s unemployment rate was 17.4% of the total labor force in 2020. Despite a slowdown in global economic activity due to the COVID-19 pandemic, unemployment in Tunisia decreased by 7.41% and reached 16.2% in 2021.
Tunisia’s per capita GDP was estimated at USD 3,815.82 whereas purchasing power parity (PPP) based per capita GDP is estimated to be at USD 12,490.201 for the year 2022.
In 2022, Tunisia's government’s revenue was TND 40.942 billion whereas the expenditure was TND 50.422 billion. This resulted in Tunisia's government’s net lending / borrowing negative at TND 9.48 billion in 2022 indicating that not enough financial resources were made available by the Tunisia government to boost economic growth.
The current account balance for Tunisia was negative USD 4.196 billion for the year 2022 and is expected to further increase at a CAGR of 7.07% and reach negative USD 2.908 billion by 2027. This negative current account balance indicates that Tunisia will remain a net borrower from the whole world till 2027.
