This study looks at the extent of reimbursement to scholars of their travel costs to academic conferences, for cooperative scholarly venture and for other events related to their fields. The study helps its readers to answer questions such as: how satisfied are faculty with the level of reimbursement for travel and conferences related to their field of research? How much support is being supplied and to whom?

What are scholars expecting for the near future in terms of support for travel and conferences?

Just a few of this report’s many findings are that:

  • Psychology and Neuroscience/Psychiatryf aculty had the highest mean funding of travel and conference expenditures.
  • Mean funding per scholar for travel and conference spending in the sample over the past two years was $10,334.
  • Scholars in the largest institutions in terms of enrollment also had the highest level of reimbursement for travel and conferences.

The data in the report is based on a survey of 378 higher education faculty drawn from a stratified universe of faculty emphasizing STEM faculty. Data is broken out by numerous institutional and personal variables including college or university type, size, and public/private status, as well as by personal respondent level of lifetime grant receipts, age, gender, work title and academic field. Data is broken out for 20 subject areas, and separately for research universities, doctoral institutions, BA and community colleges.
