Crude tall oil (CTO) is a by-product derived from the pulp and paper industry, specifically during the Kraft process of wood pulp production. It is a versatile raw material that is further refined to produce a range of products including fatty acids, resin acids, and sterols. These constituents have various applications, one of which is in the lubricants and greases market. In the production of lubricants, the fatty acids from CTO are often used as a base for synthetic esters, which are key components due to their biodegradability and excellent lubrication properties. These esters are then formulated into greases and lubricants that provide enhanced performance for industrial machinery and automotive applications, offering benefits such as high thermal stability and resistance to oxidation.
As for the companies operating in the crude tall oil market within the lubricants and greases segment, several key players are notable. Some of these are Forchem, a Finland-based company specializing in tall oil refining; Kraton Corporation, which produces specialty chemicals including tall oil fatty acids; and Eastman Chemical Company that provides chemicals, fibers, and plastics materials, harnessing tall oil derivatives in their products. Additionally, Georgia-Pacific Chemicals and Ingevity are both involved in the manufacturing and supply of tall oil based materials for various industrial applications, including lubricants and greases.
