Etravirine is an antiretroviral drug used to treat HIV/AIDS. It is a non-nucleoside reverse transcriptase inhibitor (NNRTI) that works by blocking the action of the HIV-1 reverse transcriptase enzyme, which is responsible for the replication of the virus. Etravirine is used in combination with other antiretroviral drugs to treat HIV-1 infection in adults and adolescents over the age of 12. It is also used to treat HIV-1 infection in adults and adolescents over the age of 12 who have already been treated with other antiretroviral drugs.
Etravirine is available in tablet form and is taken orally. It is usually taken twice daily with food. Common side effects of etravirine include nausea, headache, and dizziness. More serious side effects may include liver problems, changes in body fat, and changes in the immune system.
Etravirine is marketed by several pharmaceutical companies, including Janssen Pharmaceuticals, Merck & Co., and Tibotec Pharmaceuticals. It is also available in generic form from several generic drug manufacturers. Show Less Read more
