Manganese ore, primarily known for its use in steel production to improve strength and durability, is a key mineral within the non-ferrous metals sector. Non-ferrous metals, metals that do not contain iron in appreciable amounts, often encompass a variety of materials including copper, aluminum, lead, tin, and zinc. Manganese does not belong to this group as it is mainly used as an alloying component with iron. However, its market dynamics can influence and be influenced by the non-ferrous sector, especially when considering its secondary demand in non-steel applications such as aluminum alloys for beverage cans or electronics. Manganese's place in the metals market is unique due to its dual role as an alloying agent and as a non-ferrous metal when used in other contexts.
Major players in the manganese ore market include South32, which operates the GEMCO mine – one of the world’s largest manganese mines – in Australia. Vale is another serious contender, with operations in Brazil producing manganese alloys and ore. Eramet, through its subsidiary COMILOG, is also a prominent player, particularly in Gabon where it mines manganese. Additionally, China Molybdenum (CMOC) has significant operations, especially in the Democratic Republic of Congo where it focuses on copper but also extracts manganese as a byproduct.
