Paricalcitol is a synthetic form of vitamin D used to treat secondary hyperparathyroidism in patients with chronic kidney disease (CKD) and end-stage renal disease (ESRD). It is also used to treat hyperphosphatemia in patients with CKD and ESRD. Paricalcitol is also used to treat liver disorders, such as primary biliary cirrhosis (PBC) and primary sclerosing cholangitis (PSC). It works by decreasing the amount of parathyroid hormone (PTH) in the body, which helps to reduce the amount of phosphorus in the blood.
Paricalcitol is available in both oral and injectable forms. It is typically taken once daily, either with or without food. Common side effects include nausea, vomiting, diarrhea, and headache. More serious side effects may include allergic reactions, kidney problems, and high calcium levels.
Paricalcitol is marketed by several pharmaceutical companies, including AbbVie, Amgen, and Teva Pharmaceuticals. It is also available as a generic drug. Show Less Read more
