Thermal Enhanced Oil Recovery (EOR) refers to a set of methods used in the oil industry to improve the extraction of heavy crude oil and bitumen from oil reservoirs. These methods involve the introduction of heat to reduce the viscosity of the oil, facilitating its flow towards production wells. Common thermal EOR techniques include steam injection, such as steam-assisted gravity drainage (SAGD) and cyclic steam stimulation (CSS), as well as in-situ combustion, where a controlled burn within the reservoir generates heat and drives oil towards the well. The market for thermal EOR is driven by the need to produce heavier oil reserves as lighter oil resources are depleted, and to enhance recovery rates from existing fields. It is a specialized segment within the larger oil recovery market, with applicability primarily in regions where heavy oil is abundant.
Several companies specialize in providing technologies and services for thermal EOR operations. Some of these include Schlumberger, Halliburton, and Baker Hughes, which offer an array of services from reservoir characterization to project implementation. Other key players in the market are Chevron Corporation, which has extensive expertise in steamflood projects, and Canadian Natural Resources Limited, known for its SAGD operations in the Canadian oil sands.
