The COVID-19 pandemic has had mixed effects on the industry's performance. Some hardware product segments recorded massive sales when homeowners worked on improving their homes during lockdowns. Major pandemic-related supply shortages have caused a sharp rise in purchase costs (both in the industry and downstream), weakening demand from key downstream markets and contributing to falling profitability. Unpredictable swings in both supply and demand have exhausted hardware product supply chains. Revenue has been growing at an anticipated annualised 2.0% over the past five years and is expected to total $5.9 billion in 2022-23, when revenue will shrink by an estimated 6.0%, hurt by rising interest rates and inflated input costs. Industry firms wholesale hardware products including building supplies and tools to retailers and construction companies. The wholesaling of plumbing goods, electric cables and timber is not included in the industry.
